Walking on the 'White' side of the street - An Introduction to the History and On-going Impact of British 'Whiteness'

Talk and Q & A Session with member Matt Jacobs.

In this talk we will explore the history and construction of 'Whiteness' as a phenomenon that structures and conditions society and social relations. We will chart mainstream political and media discourses that over time have embedded ideologies of White Supremacy into Britain, and into the minds and actions of White British people. We will look at White Privilege as both a structural phenomenon that impacts upon housing, education, health, and employment such that People of Colour are systemically discriminated against. We will also look at it as a day-to-day reality of White Privilege that causes daily 'aggressions' towards People of Colour. We will discuss why White people accrue advantages and benefits simply due to the colour of our skin and how Whiteness as a discriminatory force is as prevalent as it was 400 years ago. As Black History is celebrated, we examine and acknowledge the destructive role of Whiteness in that history from Pre-Enlightenment time to today.
