20/10/21 BHM Magazine Celebration and Launch

Now in its sixth year of publication, the Bristol Black History Month (BBHM) Magazine has been celebrating Black voices in Bristol with the aim of showcasing the past, present and future legacies of Black communities.

From left to right, Adan, Sibusiso, Kat, Angelique, Marta, Hanna, Munira and Mo.

Every year, the magazine comes to life when everyday individuals and businesses come together to showcase their services, lived experience, achievements, creative projects, services, and aspirations! The poems, articles, artwork, events and photography included in the magazine are a product of people, power and agency.

This year’s edition has been produced in partnership with Black South West Network, Cognitive Paths, Punch Records and Cables&Cameras. The magazine is a visual and written narrative of our four themes this year; Heritage, Knowledge, Talent and Education!

The Magazine cover and interview features The Cole Family, a mother and son duo of Amirah Cole, Councillor for Bristol’s Ashley Ward, and her son Amari Cole (aka Wish Master). Their stories and experience illustrate this year’s focus on the power of legacy, leadership and community.

Amirah and Amari (aka Wish Master) spoke at our fundraising event on Wednesday the 20th of October at Strange Brew. Each ticket included a copy of the magazine, delicious Caribbean food, a donation and an inspirational curated exhibition.

The magazine and event were also featured in a Bristol 24/7 article.

With a Caribbean buffet provided by Café Conscious, music by DJ Style & MC J.n.R, and an exhibition throughout the night from Black Bristol photographers Rick Thompson and Donavan Jackson, a very vibrant celebration of Bristol Black History Month 2021 was had with the Bristol community, contributors, supporters, volunteers and performers. Our vision is to support and represent Black communities and creatives in Bristol throughout the year, not just in October.
