BSWN's Statement of Solidarity and Support for Families Affected by Hurricane Melissa

Black South West Network (BSWN) extends our support and solidarity with the families and communities in Jamaica, Cuba, and the wider Caribbean region who are being impacted by the destruction caused by Hurricane Melissa. The hurricane has been reported as the strongest storm to hit the region in recent history, with the full extent of its impact still to be seen. Our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods, and to all those enduring uncertainty in the storm’s aftermath.

We recognise the immense courage and resilience shown by affected communities, as well as the dedication of local responders and international humanitarian organisations working tirelessly to provide relief and support to the most affected areas. Bristol has a long and deep connection with the Caribbean, and our thoughts are also with those across Bristol, the South West, and the wider UK Caribbean diaspora who are anxiously awaiting news of loved ones or facing uncertainty during this difficult time.

In this moment of crisis, we join others in calling for collective global action to ensure that essential aid, resources, and long-term recovery efforts reach those most in need. We also call organisations, institutions, and individuals to join us in emphasising the disproportionate impact that climate change has on communities living in the Global South, with its consequences often coming in the form of more extreme weather phenomena like hurricanes and typhoons. It is our responsibility, as those living in the Global North, to take urgent action and reduce our environmental impact while supporting global resilience. To supplement this call to action, BSWN has identified crucial aid agencies that are providing much-needed support on the ground.

Ways you can support

United Way of Jamaica (UWJ)

A locally governed, non-partisan organisation founded in 1985 and based in Kingston. It mobilises resources to support community development, such as education, healthcare, and disaster relief. Donations help to support immediate response and long-term resilience building.

Jamaica Red Cross (JRC)

The Jamaica Red Cross is a national humanitarian society that leads disaster relief operations, emergency shelter support, first aid, health services and welfare assistance on the ground across the island.

Remittance Fee Waiver (Direct Support to Individuals)

MoneyGram is waiving transfer fees for debit-card funds sent to Jamaica in light of the impact of Hurricane Melissa. This allows grassroots supporters to send money directly to family or individuals on the island without the usual fee. Money Transfers can be sent here.

DirectRelief

DirectRelief is a humanitarian aid organisation that is active in more than 80 countries with a mission to improve the health and lives of people affected by poverty or emergencies – without regard to politics, religion, or ability to pay.
